A 3D User and Maintenance Manual for UAVs and Commercial Aircrafts Based on Augmented Reality

Traditional User/Maintenance Manuals provide useful information when dealing with simple machines. However, when dealing with complex systems of systems and highly miniaturized technologies, like UAVs, or with machines with millions of parts, a commercial aircraft is a case in point, new technologies taking advantage of Augmented Reality can rapidly and effectively support the maintenance operations. This paper presents a User/Maintenance Manual based on Augmented Reality to help the operator in the detection of parts and in the sequence to be followed to assemble/disassemble systems and subsystems. The proposed system includes a handheld device and/or an head mounted display or special goggles, to be used by on-site operators, with software management providing data fusion and overlaying traditional 2D user/maintenance manual information with an augmented reality software and appropriate interface.

A Bioregenerative Life Support System Based on Near Term Technology Developments

Bioregenerative life support systems have the potential to reduce the need for resupply from Earth for extraterrestrial habitats. The proposed advanced life support system, developed by an international and interdisciplinary team, is an innovation combination of current and near term research and technologies. The system combines physico-chemical methods with algae, aquaculture and higher plants to purify wastes and provide consumables. A closed loop percentage of 90-95% percent is expected with additional supplies for dietary supplement and maintenance. The information gained from the development of the proposed artificial biosphere can also help to solve sustainability problems currently prevalent on Earth.

A Blockchain-Backed Database for Qualified Parts

Certain standard parts in the aerospace industry require qualification as a prerequisite to manufacturing, signifying that the manufacturer’s capacity to produce parts consistent with the performance specifications has been audited by a neutral third-party auditor, key customer, and/or group of customers. In at least some cases, a certifying authority provides manufacturers with certificates of qualification which they can then present to prospective customers, and/or lists qualified suppliers in a Qualified Parts List or Qualified Supplier List available from that qualification authority. If this list is in an infrequently updated and/or inconsistently styled format as might be found in a print or PDF document, potential customers wishing to integrate qualification information into their supplier tracking systems must use a potentially error-prone manual process that could lead to later reliance on out-of-date or even forged data.

A Brief Study of Conditionally Enabled Phase Compensated Rate Limiters

This paper describes how airplane control surface rate limiting can enable a ‘cliff-like’ onset of Pilot-Induced Oscillation, (P.I.O.) and how the danger can be erased by implementation of Conditionally Enabled Phase Compensated Rate Limiters, (PCRLs), in the design of the airplane's flight control system. The application is particularly important for large airplanes where control surface actuator sizing and the associated hydraulic system volumetric flow rate capability cannot be generously over-sized without large weight and cost penalties. It is shown that the PCRL can remain inactive during normal airplane operations where RMS control commands are relatively small thus avoiding adverse control surface response effects that have hindered earlier PCRL acceptance.

Some of the methods used for experimental detection and examination of wake vortices are presented. The aim of the article is to provide the reader a brief overview of the available methods. The material is divided into two major sections, one dealing with methods used primarily in the laboratory, and the second part devoted to those used in field operations. Over one hundred articles are cited and briefly discussed.

With reusability accepted as a means of reducing operating costs, the size of the initial investment (research and development) is likely to determine the choice for the next generation boosters. High volume utilisation lifting bodies propelled by LH/LOX rockets in a vertical take-off mode are shown to be superior to several other concepts. This is largely due to the low manufactured weight without undue complexity or use of exotic materials, leading to low R&D and low unit cost. Even lower costs can be shown for a modular concept (MUSTARD) in which basically identical lifting bodies units are utilised as both boosters and spacecraft. The concept is shown to be feasible, and progress on some aspects of the associated structural analysis is described.

A Building for Testing European Rovers and Landers under Simulated Surface Conditions: Part 1 - Design and Phasing

Europe has embarked on a new programme of space exploration involving the development of rover, lander and probe missions to visit planets, moons and near Earth objects (NEOs) throughout the Solar System. Rovers and landers will require testing under simulated planetary, and NEO conditions to ensure their ability to land on and traverse the alien surfaces. ESA has begun work on a building project that will provide an enclosed and controlled environment for testing rover and lander functions such as landing, mobility, navigation and soil sampling. The facility will first support the European ExoMars mission due for launch in 2013. This mission will deliver a robotic rover to the Martian surface. This paper, the first of several on the project, gives an overview of its design configuration and construction phasing. Future papers will cover its applications and operations.

As MIDAS specifically targets support of configurational studies in a Conceptual and Preliminary Design environment, peculiar requirements such as scope, range of applicability, and robustness of the system components, reliability of results, care-free operability, and fast response times have to be properly addressed.

A CIRA 3D Ice Accretion Code for Multiple Cloud Conditions Simulations

This work presents the implementation and validation efforts of a 3D ice accretion solver for aeronautical applications, MESS3D, based on the advanced Messinger model. The solver is designed to deal with both liquid phase and ice crystal cloud conditions. In order to extend the Messinger model to 3D applications, an algorithm for the water run-back distribution on the surface was implemented, in place of an air flow stagnation line search algorithm, which is straightforward in 2D applications, but more complicated in 3D. The developed algorithm aims to distribute the run-back water in directions determined by air pressure gradients or shear forces. The data structure chosen for MESS3D allows high flexibility since it can manage the necessary input solutions on surface grids coming from both structured and unstructured solvers, regardless the number of edges per surface cells.

It describes the Aerospace industry, the carriers and general aviation in statistical terms, indicates the impact of economic regulatory reform and suggests the way ahead for Canadian and other authorities lies in the attitude and methodologies practiced by the European authorities in their development of JARs. I SHOULD PERHAPS start this presentation with a short word about authorities. At the conclusion of a speech on safety regulation by Mr. Ronald Ashford of the UK Civil Aviation Authority, reported in Flight International of April 19, 1986, the following quotation from St. Paul to the Romans appeared: “You wish to have no fear of the authorities? Then continue to do right and you will have their approval, for they are God's agents working for your good”.

A Case Study of Stormwater Runoff Containing Deicing / Anti-icing Fluids Treatment at DFW Airport

Airline tenants at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW Airport) use deicing/anti-icing chemicals, as may be needed, to maintain wintertime operations. DFW Airport has implemented best management practices for pollution prevention measures relating to deicing/anti-icing activities. However, as the planes leave the deicing pads, deicing/anti-icing fluids can drip from the planes onto the runways, taxiways, and ramp areas. As planes take off, the fluids can also shear off onto Airport property. During winter storm events, these deicing/anti-icing fluids are flushed off the runways, etc., with the stormwater. Stormwater containing deicing/anti-icing fluids can discharge through outfalls into Trigg Lake located in the southwestern part of the DFW Airport property.

More realistic training for flight crews would not only be beneficial but could be instrumental in the reduction of incidents and accidents, as well as the casualties caused by accidents. Modern equipment and technology are a plus, but they are not necessary for the application of realistic training, when realistic means any training that can provide flight crews with the necessary practical knowledge and skill to deal effectively with real world situations. Examples of this are provided.

This paper documents the design and validation of a closed cycle propulsion system suitable for use on the Perseus A high altitude research aircraft. The atmospheric science community is expected to be the primary user of this aircraft with initial missions devoted to the study of ozone depletion and global warming. To date large amounts of funding are not available to the atmospheric science community, so to be useful, the aircraft must satisfy stringent cost and performance criteria. Among these, the aircraft has to be capable of carrying 50 kg of payload to altitudes of at least 25km, have a initial cost in the $1-2M range, be capable of launch from remote sites, and be available no later than 1994. These operational criteria set narrow boundaries for propulsion system cost, complexity, availability, reliability, and logistical support requirements.

The vision of SESAR is to integrate and implement new technologies to improve air traffic management (ATM) performance. Enhanced automation and new separation modes characterize the future concept of operations, where the role of the human operator will remain central by integrating more managing and decision-making functions. The expected changes represent challenges for the human actors in the aircraft and on ground and must be taken into account during the development phase. Integrating the human in the ATM system development starting from the early design phase is a key factor for future acceptability. This paper describes the adaptation of currently applied Cockpit Human Factors processes in order to be able to design the aircraft for the future ATM environment.

A Comparative Study of Turbulence Models in Axisymmetric Nozzle Flow

Two turbulence models have been studied to determine which of the models should be used in further Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) research. A zero-equation turbulence model, Baldwin-Lomax (B-L), is easy to use, requires no history of the flow, and requires little in the way of additional computations or additional computer memory space [1]. A two-equation k-ε model, Yang-Shih (Y-S), is more difficult to implement, does require flow history, and requires many more computations and much more computer space; however, it is potentially more accurate than the B-L model [2]. Using both Navier-Stokes (NS) and Parabolized Navier-Stokes (PNS) solvers, the two models and their codes were validated against the testbed of the Wright Laboratory (WL) Mach 12 wind tunnel nozzle.

Pilot judgement and decision-making ability are critical components of the safety of the air transportation system. Although pilot judgement and decision-making has been identified as significant recurring causal factors in air transportation accidents, and the trend toward non-gender specific occupations has resulted in an increase in the level of female participation in the predominantly male pilot population, only a minimal amount of research has been conducted to explore the significance of gender in aeronautical decision-making. A survey instrument was distributed to a representative sample of male and female airline pilots to obtain data to measure the influence of social stress in fostering biased decision-making in the air carrier environment. The research concluded that certain significant differences do exist with regard to gender in determining susceptibility to the influence of social stress in aeronautical decision-making.

A Comparison of Electronic Heterodyne Moire Deflectometry and Electronic Heterodyne Holographic Interferometry for Flow Measurements

Electronic heterodyne moire deflectometry and electronic heterodyne holographic interferometry are compared as methods for the accurate measurement of refractive index and density change distributions of phase objects. Experimental results are presented to show that the two methods have comparable accuracy for measuring the first derivative of the interferometric fringe shift. The phase object for the measurements is a large crystal of KD*P, whose refractive index distribution can be changed accurately and repeatably for the comparison. Although the refractive index change causes only about one interferometric fringe shift over the entire crystal, the derivative shows considerable detail for the comparison. As electronic phase measurement methods, both methods are very accurate and are intrinsically compatible with computer controlled readout and data processing. Heterodyne moire is relatively inexpensive and has high variable sensitivity.
